Amnesty International is a Nobel Prize-winning grassroots activist organization with over one million members worldwide. Amnesty International is dedicated to freeing prisoners of conscience, gaining fair trials for political prisoners, ending torture, political killings and “disappearances,” and abolishing the death penalty. Portland’s Amnesty International Chapter, Group 48, has been in existence since the 1970s.

AUPHR is an association of American taxpayers united by a mutual concern for human rights in general and Palestinian human rights in particular. Our aim is to eliminate the substantial U.S. funding and discriminatory U.S. policies that directly or indirectly support the oppression and violation of human rights of Palestinian people in Israel and the Israeli occupied territories. Our tools are public education and political and legl action.

Since 1985, a non-profit, all-volunteer, collectively run bookstore devoted to social change. We offer great books as well as video rentals, a lending library and free meeting space for nonprofit groups.

The Shadow Project is a remembrance of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, on August 6 and 9, 1945. These were the first cities where nuclear bombs were used against human beings. When the survivors of those bombs returned to the city centers, they found the imprints of human beings vaporized by the heat of the blast. We commemorate those deaths with the Shadow Project, so that the world may never suffer that devastation again.

Vietnam Veterans Against the War Anti- Imperialist is part of a network of anti-imperialist veterans who are proud of our resistance to U.S. aggression around the world. The Portland Peaceful Response Coalition is a volunteer community organization advocating peaceful, nonviolent responses to conflict. PPRC emerged from a community gathering on the evening of September 11, 2001, as people of many local peace and justice organizations came together in anticipation of a violent, unjust and criminally misguided response by the US government to the 9/11 attacks.

Peace is more than the absence of war. Peace embraces an active, nonviolent approach to problems, an understanding that all people have a right to share the resources of the earth and a commitment to fair play and a role for every person in the decisions that affect their lives. Peace, therefore, implies action on behalf of a broad range of concerns.
